Extra Credit Assignment for Diet Log Name:_________________________

Use the NATS site to analyze everything you eat for 24 hours. Print off the final analysis and attach it to this page. Below, complete the following conversions:

Carbs: Each gram of carbohydrate has about 4 calories. Multiply your grams of carb by 4 to get calories from carbohydrates.

Proteins: Each gram of protein has about 4 calories. Multiply your grams of protein by 4 to get calories from carbohydrates.

Lipids: Each gram of fat has about 9 calories. Multiply your grams of fat by 9 to get calories from fat.

For each category, divide the calories by the total calories consumed during the day. The three percentages should add up to 100%.

g of Carb __________ x 4 = /total calories

g of Protein _________x 4 = /total calories

g of Fat __________ x 9 = /total calories

Percent of calories from carbs =

Percent of calories from protein=

Percent of calories from fat=

You should also have a category listed for saturated fat. This is a subset of your total fat intake, but it is important to monitor your saturated fat intake. Take this number (grams of saturated fat), and multiply it by 9 (calories per gram) to get your calories from saturated fat. Divide this number by the total calories for the day to get your percentage of calories from saturated fat.

g of Saturated fat ____________ x 9 = /total calories

Percent of calories from saturated fat =

If a fat isn’t saturated, is it considered to be unsaturated. Thus your total ‘percent of calories from fat’ minus your ‘percent of calories from saturated fat’ will equal your percent of calories from unsaturated fats. For example, if 35% of an individual’s diet consists of fat and his saturated fat consumption accounts for 15% of his diet, 20% of his calories come from unsaturated fats (% saturated + % unsaturated = % of calories from fat).

Below, record % of calories from saturated and unsaturated fats:

Percent of calories from Saturated fat=

Percent of calories from Unsaturated fat=

Make a pie chart representing all of your calories and break it down into percent of calories from protein, carbohydrates, saturated fats, and unsaturated fats. The graph should be prepared on a computer and can be printed off or email to me. Hand in this assignment and a copy of your NATS data page.
